This project was a self-guided digital art tour (video and audio) on the Story City app in Brisbane’s Vibrant Eagle Lane, as part of Brisbane City Council’s BrisAsia.

The installation create by Engage Arts, and featuring artists Elysha Rei (Gould), and Vanghoua Anthony Vue, celebrated these two talented artists Asian heritage with each piece augmented on the app by an video showing that piece being installed, and an audio interview with the artist. This was so, even with the pieces removed at the end of the festival, curious visitors could still see the installation in digital form. Engage Arts developed the curatorial theme of ‘Weaving Our Heritage’ and contracted Brisbane-based artists, Vanghoua Anthony Vue and Elysha Rei (Gould), both of whom explore their Asian heritage through their art practice, to produce new works especially for the installation. Vue is a multidisciplinary artist who draws on popular culture, street art, language systems and Hmong textile traditions, weaving aspects of his Hmong heritage into a contemporary art context. Rei explores her Japanese lineage, using concepts of community transition and migration by referencing symbolic Japanese animals, plants and patterns and placing them within new environments.

ICE AND THE CITY (Edmonton CBD)

Created by: Boardwalk Ice on Whyte & Lincoln Ho

This project was a self-guided digital art tour (video) on the Story City app in Edmonton’s Downtown core at 5 restaurant patios, as part of the Ice on Whyte ice sculpture Festival.

It is time to come out and explore!

Boardwalk Ice on Whyte is brightening up winter in Edmonton by adding breathtaking ice sculptures from award-winning artists to winter patios around downtown and Old Strathcona.

In this tour of the downtown city sculptures you’ll not only meet the talented sculptors who bring these works of art to life and hear the inside stories behind the sculptures, but you’ll see behind-the-scenes of how these plain blocks go from installation, to draft, to fully fledged works of art. At the stops, why not show our local restaurant hosts some love by picking up a bite to eat or drink on your tour.

This journey starts at the Central Social Hall located on Jasper Ave, and 109th Street.

The Ice on Whyte Festival was founded in 2003 by the Old Strathcona Business Association in partnership with local artists interested in presenting the unique art-form of ice carving to Edmonton. In 2011, the Ice on WHyte Festival Society was founded and in 2016, the Society attained registered charitable status to ensure its long-term sustainability and ability to work and grow inside of its vision, mission and charitable objectives. Ice on Whyte was rated by World Atlas as one of the world’s 10 Best Ice Festivals in 2017, by Readers’ Digest as one of the top 10 winter festivals in Canada and is also the winner of the 2012 Alberta Pride Alto Award from Travel Alberta.
