Today’s tour will take you back in time to 2024, where you will see how the City of Atlanta paid homage to the Civil Rights Movement.
Taking place during the mid-20th century, the Civil Rights Movement was a pivotal point in America where sit-ins, advocacy, protests, and other acts pushed for awareness and action to end racism and segregation. The Movement was a big leap forward, empowering meaningful change. Laws, protections, and a newfound awareness helped bring citizens from all walks of life together. Work on this continues, but the Civil Rights Movement was instrumental in many of the freedoms people of color enjoy today.
Your nearest ZeNGY portal is located at The Hard Day’s Work Shack. Please assemble at 659 Auburn Ave in front of the Shack and await further instructions.
JAZZ BUSKING THROUGH LITTLE FIVE POINTS (Little Five Points): G RATING
This tour will take you on a journey through historic Little Five Points! Filled with vintage shops, indie book and record stores, and masses of murals and pieces of public art, it is one of the most creative and eclectic neighbourhoods in Atlanta. As you explore this fascinating district, you’ll encounter challenges and trivia questions, and experience the music that runs through the lifeblood of the city, provided by some of Atlanta’s finest local jazz musicians.
Little 5 – as the locals call it – was one of the first commercial areas founded outside of downtown Atlanta. It was hit hard by the Depression, fell into dereliction in the ensuing years, and, for a time, looked as though it was going to be erased entirely. However, the local citizens decided enough was enough, and, in the 1970s, came together with a common cause – to take back the neighbourhood. The community banded together to form coalitions, acquire funding, launch businesses, and rebuild Little Five Points into the completely unique avant-garde arts and shopping district it is today.
Little 5’s historic entrepreneurial spirit is a perfect example of the community-based creativity that drives the heartbeat of Atlanta.
Alongside your exploration of Little 5, you will get to enjoy some of the fruits of the Atlanta Jazz Festival.
The Atlanta Jazz Festival was founded in 1978 by the Mayors’ Office for Cultural Affairs, with the aim of introducing a diverse audience to the rich heritage and variety of jazz, and to amplify the creative work of local, national and international artists. Very much in the same creative entrepreneurial spirit that revitalized Little 5, the Jazz Festival has enlivened the city of Atlanta with music by some of the world’s finest artists, draws audiences from far and wide, and continues to propel local musicians to global success.
The music and recordings you’ll listen to in this tour were recorded as part of the 2020 Atlanta Jazz Festival, which was held virtually due to the Corona Virus Pandemic.
To begin your journey, please make your way to Little 5 Points.
ATLANTA CULTURAL RENAISSANCE TOUR (Downtown): G RATING
Take a walk on the creative side as you work together to make a piece of art from the bones of the city itself! In this interactive walk through downtown Atlanta you’ll step into the cultural history of the city, taking in iconic public artworks and locations as we celebrate 50 years since the Inception of the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.
In additional to tackling trivia and challenges, you’ll work with your wandering band to build a piece of art, so pack a pen and pencil, or charge your phone, and let’s explore Atlanta’s deep cultural roots!
This experience was created to celebrate 50 years since the inception of the Atlanta Bureau of Cultural and International Affairs – now the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) – and the evolution of a vision shared by Atlanta’s first African American Mayor, Maynard Holbrook Jackson, and artists alike. These dynamic individuals understood that the arts are a powerful source of community building, expression and empathy, improving civic life, inspiring hope and unity. The work they began in establishing Atlanta as a haven for artists laid the foundations for the city to become the incredible cultural force it is today. On this tour, we’ll experience a snapshot album of this city’s journey to becoming a world centre for arts and creativity.
To begin your journey, please make your way to: Five Points in downtown Atlanta
